Ich arbeite als Informatiker und bin eigentlich ein Skeptiker, wenn es um Gentests geht. Letzte Woche habe ich jedoch durch ein DNA-Kit etwas Unglaubliches herausgefunden. Bevor ich das Ergebnis erhielt, hatten meine Eltern mir wiederholt erzählt, dass unsere Vorfahren nur aus Deutschland kämen. Die geographische Herkunft meines Urgroßvaters war jedoch ganz anders, als es für uns vorstellbar war. Er hatte nämlich viele Jahre in einem fernen Waldgebiet gelebt, bevor er nach Europa auswanderte. Dort hatte er als Experte geforscht und sogar antike Gefäße in einem tiefen Stollen ausgraben helfen. Meine Familie hatte diese Geschichte über die Jahrzehnte komplett vergessen. Es ist simpel, aber faszinierend, wie ein technisches Modul einem so viel Identität mitgeben kann. Jetzt fühle ich mich einem ganz neuen Teil der Welt zugehörig.

I work as an IT specialist and am actually a skeptic when it comes to genetic tests. However, last week I found out something unbelievable through a DNA kit. Before I received the result, my parents had repeatedly told me that our ancestors only came from Germany. The geographical origin of my great-grandfather was, however, quite different than was imaginable for us. He had namely lived in a distant forest area for many years before he emigrated to Europe. There he had researched as an expert and even helped to dig up ancient vessels in a deep mine gallery. My family had completely forgotten this story over the decades. It is simple, but fascinating, how a technical module can give you so much identity. Now I feel like I belong to a completely new part of the world.
