Explanation
What is the Plusquamperfekt?
The Plusquamperfekt (Past Perfect) is often called the "past of the past." At the B1 level, you use it to describe an action that was completed before another event in the past. It helps clarify the sequence of events when you are already talking or writing about the past in the Präteritum or Perfekt.
How to Form the Plusquamperfekt
To form this tense, you follow the same logic as the Perfekt, but with one key difference: you use the Präteritum forms of the auxiliary verbs haben (hatte) or sein (war). To this, you add the Partizip II (past participle) at the end of the sentence.
Sentence Structure and Conjunctions
In a main clause, the conjugated verb (hatte/war) takes the second position, and the participle goes to the end. However, the Plusquamperfekt is most frequently used in subordinate clauses starting with nachdem (after). In these clauses, the conjugated auxiliary verb moves to the very end of the sentence, appearing right after the participle.
Usage with 'nachdem'
When using nachdem, if the main clause is in the Präteritum, the subordinate clause must be in the Plusquamperfekt. This clearly shows that the action in the nachdem-clause happened first. For example: "Nachdem er das Fahrrad geflickt hatte, fuhr er los." (First he mended it, then he left).

Common Mistakes
Learners often use 'haben' in the present tense instead of 'hatte' in the past tense, and forget that the verb moves to the end after 'nachdem'.
Even in the Plusquamperfekt, verbs of movement or failure like 'durchfallen' must use 'sein' (war) as the auxiliary verb.
It is important to use the correct irregular Partizip II form; 'wegschmeissen' is an irregular verb.
