Understanding Two-Part Connectors
Two-part connectors, or zweiteilige Konnektoren, are correlative conjunctions that work in pairs to link words, phrases, or entire clauses. At the B1 level, these are essential for expressing more complex relationships between ideas, such as addition, alternatives, or contradictions. They help make your German sound more sophisticated and precise.
Addition and Emphasis
The connectors sowohl ... als auch (both ... and) and nicht nur ... sondern auch (not only ... but also) are used to combine two positive elements. While sowohl ... als auch simply lists two things, nicht nur ... sondern auch places a stronger emphasis on the second element, often suggesting it is a surprising or significant addition.
Alternatives and Negations
When you need to choose between two options, use entweder ... oder (either ... or). Conversely, if you want to deny two options at once, use weder ... noch (neither ... nor). It is important to remember that weder ... noch already contains a negative meaning, so you do not need to add nicht or kein to the sentence.
Concession and Contrast
The pair zwar ... aber (indeed/it's true ... but) is used to express a concession. You admit that one fact is true (zwar), but then introduce a contrasting point or a limitation (aber). This is very common in debates or when weighing the pros and cons of a situation.

Common Mistakes
The connector 'weder... noch' is already negative. Adding 'kein' or 'nicht' creates an incorrect double negative.
In German, you must always place a comma before the second part of the connector if it introduces a new clause, especially with 'aber' and 'sondern auch'.
If 'noch' starts a new clause with a verb, the verb must come immediately after 'noch' (inversion).
