Letztes Wochenende habe ich meinen Großeltern beigebracht, wie man moderne Software für Videoanrufe nutzt. Als Softwareentwickler dachte ich zuerst, die Umsetzung wäre kinderleicht, doch das Interface wirkte auf sie anfangs völlig überladen. Je öfter wir jedoch die interaktive Anbindung testeten, desto sicherer wurden sie in der Bedienung. Wir mussten mühsam jedes Symbol entschlüsseln, damit sie die Schaltung der Kamera richtig verstehen konnten. Sowohl mein Großvater als auch meine Großmutter waren hochmotiviert, endlich ihren Landsmann in Kanada virtuell zu treffen. Ich fungierte als ihr geduldiger Navigator durch das digitale Labyrinth, um ihren Horizont zu verbreitern. Es war eine faszinierende Weiterentwicklung zu sehen, wie sie lernten, ihre Kontakte mit dem Internet zu verknüpfen. Früher sprachen sie oft über ihre Arbeit mit Steinkohle oder den alten Wohnbau, heute fachsimpeln sie über Elektromobilität oder twittern kleine Nachrichten. Nachdem sie endlich das richtige Feld auf dem Display abdrücken konnten, war die Freude über das erste Gesicht auf dem Bildschirm riesig. Diese neue digitale Brücke ist für sie mehr als nur Technik; sie ist eine wertvolle emotionale Verbindung.

Last weekend I taught my grandparents how to use modern software for video calls. As a software developer, I initially thought the implementation would be child's play, but the interface seemed completely overloaded to them at first. However, the more often we tested the interactive connection, the more confident they became in using it. We had to laboriously decode every symbol so that they could correctly understand the camera's switching. Both my grandfather and my grandmother were highly motivated to finally meet their fellow countryman in Canada virtually. I acted as their patient navigator through the digital labyrinth in order to broaden their horizons. It was a fascinating further development to see how they learned to link their contacts with the internet. In the past, they often talked about their work with hard coal or old housing construction, but today they talk shop about electromobility or tweet small messages. After they were finally able to press the right field on the display, the joy at seeing the first face on the screen was enormous. This new digital bridge is more than just technology for them; it is a valuable emotional connection.
