You had invited friends over to watch a live stream of a Mars probe landing, but the signal was lost just seconds before touchdown.

Wir saßen alle gespannt nebeneinander auf dem Sofa, um die Landung der Mars-Sonde live zu verfolgen. Zuvor hatten wir mehrfach die aktuellen Berichte über die Mission im Internet gelesen. Die NASA hatte zahlreiche Tests durchgeführt, damit das Prinzip der Landung sicher funktioniert. Wir hatten uns sehr darauf gefreut, dass die Oberfläche des Planeten endlich auf dem Monitor sichtbar wird. Doch plötzlich war das Signal weg, kurz bevor die Landung eigentlich zuende war. Wir konnten kaum glauben, dass die Verbindung so kurz vor dem Ziel einfach abgebrochen war. Es fühlte sich irgendwie nicht real an, da wir die gesamte Vorrunde der Mission genau beobachtet hatten. Es blieb nur noch etwas Pizza übrig, während wir gemeinsam versuchten, die Störung zu deuten. Bestimmt gab es ein technisches Problem im Kern der Sonde, das niemand vorhersehen konnte. Bis zum Jahresende werden wir hoffentlich erfahren, ob die Mission trotzdem erfolgreich war.

We all sat excitedly next to each other on the sofa to follow the landing of the Mars probe live. Previously, we had read the current reports about the mission on the internet several times. NASA had carried out numerous tests so that the landing principle would work safely. We had really looked forward to the planet's surface finally becoming visible on the monitor. But suddenly the signal was gone, just before the landing was actually over. We could hardly believe that the connection had simply broken off so close to the destination. Somehow it didn't feel real, as we had closely observed the entire preliminary phase of the mission. Only a little pizza was left over while we tried together to interpret the malfunction. There was certainly a technical problem in the core of the probe that no one could have foreseen. By the end of the year, we will hopefully find out whether the mission was successful anyway.
