Liebes jüngeres Ich, erinnerst du dich an den Tag in unserem ländlichen Kirchdorf, als die Sonne plötzlich verschwand? Die Planung für dieses Ereignis hatte schon Wochen vorher begonnen. Mein Vater und ich hatten in einem dicken Buch alles über die totale Sonnenfinsternis nachgeschlagen, bevor der große Tag endlich kam. Am Mittag stieg die Spannung bei allen Nachbarn, während die Sonne langsam ihren hellen Glanz verlor. Das Licht wurde seltsam matt und eine kühle Stille legte sich über die grünen Felder. Ich befürchtete kurz, dass die Welt untergehen würde, weil es mitten am Tag so dunkel war. Nur eine einzelne Möwe flog völlig verwirrt über den schwarzen Himmel, als wäre es tiefe Nacht. Du hattest dir sicherlich große Sorgen gemacht, aber der goldene Schein am Horizont kehrte bald darauf zurück. Dieses Erlebnis war dreifach so beeindruckend, wie ich es mir vorher in meiner Fantasie vorgestellt hatte.

Dear younger self, do you remember the day in our rural village with its church when the sun suddenly disappeared? The planning for this event had already begun weeks before. My father and I had looked up everything about the total solar eclipse in a thick book before the big day finally arrived. At noon, the tension rose among all the neighbors as the sun slowly lost its bright radiance. The light became strangely dull and a cool silence settled over the green fields. I briefly feared that the world would end because it was so dark in the middle of the day. Only a single seagull flew completely confused across the black sky as if it were deep night. You had certainly been very worried, but the golden glow on the horizon returned soon after. This experience was three times as impressive as I had previously imagined in my fantasy.
