Before we begin the expedition, we should take into consideration the full disclosure of all liability risks as well as the equipment lease conditions. In view of the extreme conditions in the Karakoram, insufficient preparation would be tantamount to an athletic death sentence. The legal basis of this leasing contract is based on a complex interplay between international law and local authority. It is beyond question that the discharge of all liability claims in return for the provision of the rental equipment represents a harsh but standard condition. We must prevent ourselves from getting entangled in bureaucratic pitfalls that almost resemble a medieval inquisition in their severity. Any suspected negligence during material testing could mean legal dynamite for the entire project. Should any misfortune befall the participants during the ascent, the claim for pain and suffering compensation is usually categorically excluded in the fine print. The institutional legitimacy provided by the host country's national Ministry of Defense is present, but it offers no protection against unpredictable natural forces. Even political discussions about liberalism or current refugee policy seem completely out of place in the solitude of the mountains. The approval of our local municipality has already been published in the official gazette to maintain the necessary transparency for the sponsors. The intercultural interaction with the local porters requires more than just anti-fascist basic convictions or the imperious demeanor of an emperor from a long-gone duchy. There is no significant resistance against the strict rules of the host country's penal code, as safety is the top priority for all of us.
