Ich lieh das Buch im letzten Monat aus. Leider wurde ich plötzlich krank und musste ins Krankenhaus. Deswegen konnte ich das Buch nicht rechtzeitig zurückgeben. Die Frist des Buches verging während meines Krankenhausaufenthalts. Ich bitte Sie daher um den Erlass der Mahngebühr. Ich füge eine Bestätigung des Krankenhauses bei. Vielen Dank für Ihr Verständnis.

I am writing to you regarding a fine for a rare book. It is an important book from the university library. I borrowed the book last month. Unfortunately, I suddenly became ill and had to go to the hospital. Therefore, I could not return the book on time. The book's due date passed during my hospital stay.
