Modal Verbs (Modalverben)

Modalverben

Subject + Modal Verb (conjugated) + [Middle part of sentence] + Main Verb (Infinitive)

Explanation

What are Modal Verbs?

Modal verbs (Modalverben) are special verbs in German that express an attitude toward an action. They tell us if someone can, must, wants to, or is allowed to do something. In Level A1, the most important ones are können (ability/possibility), müssen (necessity), wollen (desire), and möchte (polite wish).

Sentence Structure

When you use a modal verb, you usually have two verbs in the sentence. The modal verb is conjugated according to the subject and stays in the second position. The second verb (the main action) stays in its base form (infinitive) and moves to the very end of the sentence. This creates a "verb bracket" around the rest of the information.

Conjugation Patterns

Modal verbs are irregular. A key rule for all modal verbs is that the ich (I) and er/sie/es (he/she/it) forms are always identical and have no personal endings (no -e or -t). Additionally, the vowel in the middle often changes in the singular forms (ich, du, er/sie/es), but returns to the original vowel in the plural forms (wir, ihr, sie/Sie).

Common Mistakes

Ich kann koche gut.
Ich kann gut kochen.

The main verb (kochen) must be in the infinitive form and placed at the very end of the sentence.

Er mussen heute kommen.
Er muss heute kommen.

In the singular forms (ich and er/sie/es), the modal verb does not take a personal ending and often changes its vowel.

Ich will trinke Wasser.
Ich will Wasser trinken.

You cannot have two conjugated verbs in the middle of a sentence; the action verb 'trinken' must move to the end.
