The present investigation deals with the annals of the von Zitzewitz lineage, as they have survived in the folios of a remote parish in the Grand Duchy of Baden. It was an age in which the Privy Councilor still decided the fate of entire stretches of land and the rule of law, as we know it today, was little more than a distant seed. In the canon law exegeses of that time, we find detailed protocols of alleged immoralities, including accusations of fornication and even incest, which threatened the family's social status. Many a nuncio or apostolic envoy might complain about the moral depravity in the province, while the common people persisted in adhering to the creed. The records touch upon dark chapters; for instance, one entry describes the physical condition of an heir whose thorax was deformed, which today would be more precisely interpreted medically as an anomaly of the uterine environment. Although terms like masturbation or specific practices, such as those of an anal nature or the blowjob, find no mention by name in the 19th-century archives—and people hardly spoke openly about the desire to masturbate—the clerics circumscribed such 'vices' with theological bravura. The triad of church, nobility, and local administration formed a rigid web in which the social half-life of a scandal often lasted for generations.
